PURGE DISHARMONY is the title of my diversity session
(three hour minimum) aimed at quelling the fires of conflict due to differences
of race, creed, or color. This process is formatted with discussions, games
and interactive events designed to dig up the real issues and address them in
a way which leads to solutions. Honest communication, in a safe atmosphere,
is an elixir which facilitates healing.
PERCEPTION is a key issue in any dispute. Do all parties perceive the problem in the same way? How can it be defined in a universal way that serves all involved? How did all parties come to this place of conflict, and where would they rather be in their relationships? During this part of the process, I insist on hearing complaints and accusations. How can wounds of prejudice or ill will heal if they are allowed to fester?
UNDERSTANDING: Do the parties involved believe that there can be a modicum of understanding between them? Where does it lie, and how do we get to it? Do they understand that they all share basic human needs?
RISK TAKING: Who among the group is willing to take a risk - to stand up and be counted in admitting that they might move a centimeter toward healing, forgiveness, understanding?
GETTING TOGETHER - How can we find the middle ground, that serves everyone and does not threaten or compromise anyone's self esteem? How do we bring together what seems so far apart?
QUALITY IS THE GOAL - to see equal and to be equal. What will that feel like and how can it be retrieved at the first hint that it may have been compromised? How can we keep the peace, the dignity, the sharing, the respect for each other, the healing we have received? How can we have fun seeing equal and being equal.
